Seabury's Sanitary Pocket Cuspidor
Coated heavy card with the original cotton insert, folded to 3.25 x 3.5 x .5 inches. Small cloth tape repair to interior, else Very Good with light rubbing/creasing. Patented in 1899 by G. R. Wyman (no. 621, 732) and "devised by Major D. M. Appel, Surgeon, U.S. Army," the product was a sanitary solution for the expectorate of tuberculosis patients. No more bloody handkerchiefs, the product was designed to be burned after 24 hours of use ("or sooner if its capacity be nearly exhausted"). Difficult to date as they remained in production through the 1920s with the same basic design, becoming popular repositories for spitting tobacco.
