Payson, Dunton & Scribner's International System of Penmanship in Fifteen Numbers, Revised and Improved (Volume Number 6) "New Brunswick School Series"

St. John, New Brunswick: J. & A. McMillan, 1870.

Wraps, 6.5 x 8.25 inches, [24] pages. Near Fine with mild discoloration. OCLC records 2 series holdings, dated 1880. Handsome typographic publisher's catalog on the rear wrap. A rare example from the Payson, Dunton & Scribner's International System, produced in 15 books. Printed on the cover: '"New Brunswick School Series" Prescribed by the Board of Education'; latter books in the series appear to have been targeted to women and "Ladies" writing and produced "on thick cream wove paper." This is number 6 in the series, self-described as "Sentences, mostly Proverbs, condensed style." Partially completed by Lottie McLean of Waterville, Carleton County, New Brunswick (Canada). The first 20 pages are entirely completed, and a single line on the final page: "A sample of my running hand penmanship terminating book 6." The pen work is notably inconsistent, including a few experiments in style reflective of a slightly restless young student. Practice specimens include, "Education is the ornament of the rich and the riches of the poor" and "Speaking without thinking is like shooting without taking aim."
