Moderne kunstschmiedearbeiten nach entwürfen…
[Louis Sullivan interest] Martin Gropius, Heino Schmieden, Hermann Ende, Wilhelm Böckmann, Ferdinand Hitzig, E. Puls; M. Fabian; A.L. Benecke, et al.
Berlin: Ernst & Korn, [1883]. Half cloth folio with printed boards; (2) leaves, 32 engraved plates (complete). Covers soiled and heavily rubbed and bumped around the edges; binding remains firm and plates are stamped “The Winslow Bros.” but are otherwise bright and clean. Paper label on cover: “For sale by S. M. O’Neill, Architectural & Decorative Books and Photographs, 1650 Madison Ave New York.”
The 32 copperplate engravings originally appeared in Architektonischen Skizzenbuch /Architectural Sketchbook from 1877-1883, showcasing the finest work of the period. The magazine provided engravings and (primarily) lithographs of architecture and ornamental design, with subjects ranging from feature staircases and gates to candlesticks and door fittings. The firms of Gropius & Schmieden and Ende & Böckmann are well represented, among others. Their influence is evident in Sullivan’s work, and this book directly links the designs. Sullivan worked with Winslow Bros. to produce the ornamental iron and bronze works that garnished his modernist masterpieces. The collection of examples in the 1901 trade catalog Ornamental Iron & Bronze Executed By The Winslow Bros… attest to the influence of these designs on the work being produced in Chicago. William Winslow was also the friend and client of Frank Lloyd Wright (Sullivan’s protegee) of the namesake Winslow House, Wright’s first major architectural triumph and the place where they published The House Beautiful together in 1896. Louis Sullivan very likely referenced this same volume—some of those smudges may even be from his fingers...
