He was sued for plagiarism and widely admonished for "mail-order quackery" by the American Medical Association and was barred by the Postmaster General for fraud. A protege of Physical Culture guru Bernarr Macfadden, he made even more of a business empire out of his health and diet claims. Amidst regular controversy, he managed his alternative health empire for over 50 years and is credited with influencing the extreme health culture that characterizes Los Angeles.
