WWI camouflaged artillery in Koblenz, Germany, June 6 1919
Vernacular photograph, approx. 5 x 3.5 inches. Small abrasions and paper residue on verso. Three men in uniform posed in front of a camouflaged boche gun, measuring just under 5 x 3.5 inches. ink inscription, "A Boche Gun of the War, 1914-1918 - Ed in Coblenz Germany, June 6-1919." With "disruptive pattern" camouflage, a technique widely practiced in WWI to make guns and vehicles difficult to detect, or appear as other objects. The men appear to be German soldiers. Koblenz became the headquarters of the U.S. Third Army after the November 1918 armistice until the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919--a few weeks after this photo.
