1930s Scrap Book by Sarah Preston, a high school student in Jeannette, Western Pennsylvania ca. 1934-1937

Stiff pebbled wraps, 11.5 x 8.25 inches. 16 leaves, used recto-only. Very Good with a dent/nick at the heel of the spine and a tear at the upper edge of pages 3 + 4, where she attached her "First Pencil from H.S." (still tucked in, but no longer in place). There are only a few places where it looks like a scrap has gone missing (fewer than five). It reads as a very cohesive document of this particular young woman's life and interests. From Girl Scouts and Church youth group activities to first jobs and day trips. Many of the spreads have a great visual balance of shape and color, and the contents capture the young woman's maturation. Highlights include a hand-drawn Mickey Mouse corner bookmark, funny photos cut out of a biology textbook, her first pencil from high school, two (mostly intact) cigarettes from Wayne and Oliver (bad influences), skating rink tickets, dinner cards, parking stubs, library permits, work slips, evidence of her beginning to drive, including a trip to Niagara Falls. Although it's not the frenzy of paper a teenage girl may be likely to accumulate, it's a very intentional collection that speaks plainly about its creator and has some wonderful visual passages.
